Overview
What we built.
Swinton Grange in Malton, North Yorkshire is a distinctive residential redevelopment of a former estate farm.
As well as renovated cottages, CDP developed a new home built around eight disused grain silos, repurposing the redundant structures and integrating them into a sensitively designed residential environment that respects the rural setting and introduces modern, energy efficient measures.
The silos were in various states of repair. Along with the original conveyor belts which transported animal feed, each was dismantled, cleaned and put back together. As much of the original aluminium as possible was re-used for cladding.

Planning patience
Planning was granted on appeal in May 2022, after the original plans, to convert the silos into a two-bedroom single-storey house, were narrowly rejected by Ryedale Council in 2021.

Stand-out staircase
The centre of the house features a sinuous Bisca staircase connecting the ground and first floors.

Energy efficient
A ground source heat pump and 44,000 kWh PV solar array mounted on the roof of the connected barn powers underfloor heating and hot water.
